Retaining walls · Charlotte
Retaining walls built to hold, with the water handled.
A retaining wall does two jobs: it holds soil, and it turns a sloped, washed-out part of the yard into flat ground you can use. On Charlotte clay it also has to deal with water, because water is what pushes walls over. Springdale builds residential stone and block walls with the drainage built in. Text photos of the slope and we will tell you what it needs.

What we handle
Retaining walls in Charlotte, NC.
Tell us what you need and where the property is. You'll get a clear quote and a spot on the schedule, all handled by one local team you get to know.
Residential stone and block retaining walls
Terraced slopes and planted terraces
Seating walls and raised patio edges
Drainage behind and around the wall
Erosion repair on washed-out banks
Patios and steps that tie into the wall
Send photos of the slope, an estimate of how tall the wall needs to be, and where the water goes when it rains. We will tell you plainly whether it is work we take on and quote it clearly if it is.
Why do retaining walls fail in Charlotte clay?
Water. Clay holds rain, gets heavy, and pushes sideways on whatever is holding it back. A wall built without a compacted stone base, a gravel backfill, and a way for water to leave behind it is being pushed by soil that is far heavier than anyone planned for. Leaning, bulging, and cracked walls on Charlotte slopes almost always trace back to missing base prep or missing drainage, not the stone itself.
That is why we treat the wall and the drainage as one project. The base goes down compacted in lifts, the backfill is gravel instead of the clay we dug out, and the water behind the wall has a route out before it builds up pressure.
How tall a retaining wall can you build?
Residential-scale walls: the seating walls, garden walls, and moderate slope walls that most yards need. A wall tall enough to need an engineer's design is a different kind of project, and we will tell you that up front rather than build it wrong. Where a tall grade change is involved, terracing it into two shorter walls is often the better answer anyway, because each wall holds less and the planted step between them is usable space.
Send photos and a rough height and we will say honestly whether it fits what we build.
Should drainage be fixed before building the wall?
Yes, or at the same time. If water is already pooling at the top of a slope or running down it, a new wall will be fighting that water from day one. Fixing the flow first, with a French drain, a buried downspout, or a swale, means the wall and the yard behind it both stay dry.
We scope the two together so the trench lines and the wall footings are planned once, not dug up twice. Our drainage and erosion page covers the water-only version of this work.
When is the best time to build a retaining wall in Charlotte?
Fall is a strong time: the ground is usually dry enough to excavate and compact properly, and a wall built now is in before the wettest months. Hardscape can be installed almost year-round here, so the real advantage of booking now is the schedule. Spring projects queue behind a season of demand, while a project scoped now gets priced and scheduled ahead of that queue.
If a slope is actively washing out, do not wait for the calendar. Erosion feeds itself: each storm cuts the channel deeper, and a bank repaired this fall is a smaller job than the same bank two winters later.

BeforeAfter
Meet the owner
Hi, I'm Justin.
I'm a homeowner before I'm anything else, and when my own place needed work I did exactly what you're doing now: called around, chased down a pile of companies, and ended up with a stack of quotes and no real way to tell who was actually any good.
So I built the thing I wish I'd had. Instead of rolling the dice on strangers, I keep a small bench of specialists I work with every single day. I know who the best turf guy in this area is, who I trust with hardscapes, and who I've stopped using because they didn't meet my bar.
I match the right one to your job, I set the scope and the price, and I check the work. These crews answer my calls differently than they'd answer yours: to them you're a one-time customer, to me they're protecting their next fifty jobs. You get that priority, and you deal with one person, me. One quote, one bill, one number to call.
“If something's ever not right, you don't chase down a crew. You call my cell. And I answer on Sunday afternoon.”

Questions about this service
- How much does a retaining wall cost in Charlotte?
- It depends on length, height, material, access, and how much drainage and base work the slope needs. We do not publish guesses. Send photos and rough dimensions and we will text you a clear written price, and tell you what would change it before anything starts.
- Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
- It depends on the height and where you live, since requirements vary by town and county. We will tell you what applies to your address before the work starts, and we will say plainly if a wall is taller than the residential work we take on.
- Can you fix a leaning or failing wall?
- Often yes. Most leaning walls failed at the base or the drainage, so the repair usually means rebuilding the wall properly rather than propping it up. Send photos and we will tell you what we see.
- Can the wall double as seating or a patio edge?
- Yes. A wall with a flat cap at the right height gives you built-in seating, and tying a patio into a wall makes both look planned. We often build them together.
- Do you handle hardscapes?
- Yes. Patios, walkways, stone borders, gravel paths, and retaining walls are all work we take on. Tell us what you have in mind and we will look at the space with you and quote it clearly before anything starts.
- What areas do you serve right now?
