Hedge & shrub trimming

Shrub trimming in Charlotte, done at the right time.

The difference between shrubs that look sculpted and shrubs that look scalped is mostly timing. Springdale prunes by plant, not by convenience: azaleas right after they bloom, summer bloomers in late winter, evergreens shaped as they need it, and nothing sheared at the moment that costs you next year's flowers.

Not sure what a shrub is or when it should be cut? Send photos. We will identify what is there and tell you what we would do and when, before anything gets trimmed.

When should shrubs be trimmed in Charlotte?

It depends on the plant, which is the whole point. Azaleas set next spring's buds in early summer, so they get pruned right after they finish blooming and are left alone by fall. Crape myrtles get a light structural pruning in late winter (never topped: the stubby 'crape murder' cut ruins their shape for years). Boxwoods and hollies take shaping through the growing season, with heavier reduction saved for late winter.

The one broadly bad time is early fall. Heavy pruning then pushes tender new growth right before Charlotte's first frost, and that growth burns. It is also why shearing everything on the same monthly schedule is the enemy of a good landscape.

Can overgrown foundation shrubs be saved?

Usually. Mature hollies, boxwoods, and loropetalum can often be reduced in stages over a season or two rather than ripped out, which preserves an established look that new one-gallon replacements would take a decade to match. When a shrub is genuinely past saving, we say so and suggest what belongs in that spot instead.

Meet the owner

Hi, I'm Justin.

I'm Justin, and I started Springdale because I'd been on the other side of this. Whenever my own place needed work, I was stuck chasing down bids from people I couldn't vouch for, with no real way to know if their work was any good, and half of them barely got back to me.

It got to the point where whoever answered fastest just won. More than once I had a bid in hand and the job done before the second guy even called me back. I figured if I was stuck choosing that way, plenty of other homeowners were too. So I built the company I wish I'd been able to hire.

When you hand me your property, I'm going to take care of it the way I take care of my own. I'm not looking for the cheap shortcut that makes my life easier. I want to do it right for you, and that's what you can count on from me.

Questions about this service

How often do shrubs need trimming?
Most Charlotte landscapes look consistently kept with three to four visits a year, timed to the plants rather than the calendar month. Fast growers like hollies and privet may want more; slow ornamentals need less.
Do you haul away the clippings?
Yes, every visit. Trimming without cleanup is half a job, and the yard should look better when we leave, not just shorter.
Can trimming be part of a recurring plan?
Yes. Hedge and shrub care folds into a landscape maintenance schedule or a custom Springdale Standard plan, so the shaping happens on time without you tracking it.
How tall a hedge can you handle?
Anything we can work safely from the ground or a ladder, which covers most residential hedges and screens. Work up in the trees belongs with a certified arborist, and we will tell you when that is the right call.

Recurring care

The Springdale Standard.

A mow-only crew leaves the rest of the lawn to you — the feeding, the aeration, the fall overseeding — and every one becomes another bill or another Saturday. The Standard keeps the lawn clean and looking sharp, all of it, on one flat monthly rate. Mulch, beds, and hedges are quoted on top — or built into your plan so it's still one simple bill.

  • Mowing, edging, trimming, and blowing on a set schedule
  • Fertilization to keep the lawn thick and green
  • Aeration and overseeding, timed right for Charlotte lawns
  • One flat monthly bill that never gets lumpy
  • The same trusted crew, with a direct line to Justin

Our promise: if a visit isn't up to standard, tell us and we come back and make it right, no charge. No contracts, cancel anytime.
