When is the best time to build a fire pit in Charlotte?

Right now, if you want to use it this fall. Charlotte evenings turn in late September, and fire pit season runs from that first cool night straight through spring, so a build booked in September or October is finished in time to be used the same season it was ordered. Wait until the first cold snap to call and you are enjoying it in the spring instead.

The schedule is the honest scarcity: fall is when everyone wants one built, and projects scoped now get first pick of the calendar. A typical build is only a few days on site once materials are in, so the gap between 'come look at my backyard' and the first fire is shorter than most people expect.

Why do DIY fire pits crack, sink, and smoke?

Because of what is under them. Carolina clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and a ring of pavers stacked on grass rides that movement until it leans, separates, and traps smoke instead of drawing it. The weekend-kit pit fails at the base, not the stone.

A built-to-last pit starts below grade: sod and soft soil excavated out, stone base compacted in lifts, drainage planned so water moves away instead of pooling under the fire, and only then the block and stone. It is the same discipline as a proper patio, which is why the pits we build sit flat and burn clean instead of becoming next year's demolition project.

What makes a fire pit look built-in instead of bought?

Scale, materials, and the ground it sits on. A fire pit sized to the seating around it, faced in stone that matches or deliberately complements the house, and set on a properly compacted base reads as part of the property. A metal ring dropped on grass reads as a purchase. The surrounding hardscape (a paver pad, a seating wall, a path that leads there) is usually what turns a fire pit into the destination corner of the yard.

One practical piece that gets skipped in catalogs: the water plan. A patio and fire pit shed rain somewhere, and on Charlotte clay that somewhere has to be chosen on purpose. We plan the drainage with the build so the gathering spot is not also the soggy spot.

Wood-burning or gas in Charlotte?

We build wood-burning fire pits, and on most Charlotte lots that is the right call anyway: the crackle, the smell, the real fire that makes the whole ritual worth gathering around, with setback distances that are easy to meet in a normal backyard. Wood is also the cheaper build and the simpler one to own; there is no line to run and nothing to service.

Gas has its place (it lights with a switch and burns clean under covered areas), but plumbed gas features are their own trade and not what we build. If your layout truly calls for gas, we will tell you that at the consultation instead of selling you the wrong pit.
